          No, women are far from equal in any sense of the meaning of the word.Great strides have been made in Western countries in the 18th,19th and 20th centuries but overall woemn are still the most oppressed and persecuted identifiable group in human history. Oppression based on being female -sexism is far more prevalent and insidious than racism in the world, including in Western societies but much worse in the rest of the world.

Why aren’t most people aware of the persecution and abuse of women around the world even in the West?

Everyone is so busy in the modern world and in media saturated America (a phenomenon that is spreading globally) that unless they take the time to research and look for alternative news sources they are stuck with whatever the corporat media conglomerates decide to put out there. (ABC, CBS,NBC, Newsweek, Time etc and don’t forget cable). Big Media is a business. Some “ISMs” are good for business either because they are wildly exaggerated, no longer exist or are culturally out of fashion hence they no longer really impact the culture even though they used to and so will not upset the apple cart. On the other hand if they dealt with the real, existing today, in your face or subtly pervasive “ISMs” such as the biggest “ISM” of all SEXISM, it might shake up the status quo and THAT would be bad for business. How do you sell  Designer bags and shoes when women are being mass raped and excluded from power centers or prostitued out by Madison Avenue and the school systems.
